Black Queens draw tough Group D at 2026 WAFCON
Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have been drawn into a tough group at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The final draw was held on Thursday, January 15, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco. Earlier in the day, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the draw arrangements.
Ghana were seeded in Pot 1 together with hosts Morocco, defending champions Nigeria, and South Africa, based on the FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on December 11, 2025.
This year’s tournament will feature 16 teams for the first time in WAFCON history, divided into four groups of four teams each.
The Black Queens have been placed in Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali, and Cape Verde. The group is expected to be very competitive, as Cameroon and Mali are known for their strength and tactical discipline, while Cape Verde continue to improve rapidly on the African stage.
Hosts Morocco were placed in Group A, Nigeria in Group C, and South Africa lead Group B, leaving Ghana in Group D.
Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
The competition will also form part of the qualification process for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, making every match important.
With the draw now completed, focus shifts to Ghana’s preparations as the Black Queens aim to perform strongly and reclaim their place among Africa’s top women’s football teams.
