Don’t credit Black Galaxies' winning run to Hearts of Oak players – Asiedu Attorbrah

Ex-Black Galaxies Attacker Abraham Asiedu Attorbrah has warned Ghanaians not to be fixated solely on the exploits of Hearts of Oak players in the current CHAN team.

Coach Annor Walker’s team have all six goals scored in the qualifiers by players from the camp of the Phobians, notably Daniel Afriyie Barnieh with three goals against Benin in the two legs and Nigeria in the first leg.

The Black Galaxies were scheduled to play Samartex 1996 in a friendly encounter later today, but have been called off and will now depart to Abuja on Thursday for the second leg of the CHAN qualifiers at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Saturday, September 3.

The 27-year-old attacker believes the team’s phenomenal run in the CHAN qualifiers is down to the overall work done by the technical team, he revealed to Class Sports.

Attobrah Said “Hearts of Oak’s gaffer deserves all the applause for the work done on some of his players [Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Gladson Awako and others] performing for the CHAN team".

“However, I wouldn’t say it is all down to the players from the camp of the Phobians because they can’t play the game alone; it is a collective effort and football is a team sport".

"The CHAN team do have other players performing as well in the three games against Benin and Nigeria".

Asiedu Attorbrah played a part in the 2014 team under Former Gaffer Maxwell Konadu finishing second in the tournament held in South Africa, as Ghana lost to Libya on penalties in the final.

“I don’t have a problem with which players play or are called up for the CHAN team, whether from Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Great Olympics, Hearts of Oak or any other local team, it should be down to parading the best and quality should not be compromised,” he stated.

Ghana’s best performance at the African Nations of Championship tournament came in 2009 and 2014 as runners-up.

Since then, the team have struggled to qualify in the last three editions in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

The Black Galaxies are on the verge of ending the long drought after recording a 2-0 win in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers against the Super Eagles B of Nigeria at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

They will play the second leg on Saturday, September 3 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

The African Nations of Championship is slated for Algeria next year from January 8 – 31, 2023.
