This Easter, the Volta Region will witness a historic gathering of Ghanaian boxing royalty as the legendary Azumah Nelson is honoured with a tournament bearing his name.

On Saturday, April 4, 2026, the Aborigines Beach Resort Hotel in Keta will host the inaugural “Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus” world title.

Nelson himself, a three-time world champion and one of Africa’s most celebrated pugilists, is expected at ringside as guest of honour.

The main event promises a thrilling all-Ghanaian showdown: former national champion Michael “One Bullet” Ansah will square off against Michael Pappoe for the first-ever Supreme Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus World Super Featherweight Championship.

The bout is not just a fight, it’s a tribute to Nelson’s enduring legacy in African boxing.

WABA President Onesmo Alfred McBride Ngowi, a former IBF Africa president, called the tournament “a bold and symbolic gesture,” organised in partnership with Mitch Gilbert Woollams, CEO of Aborigines Boxing Promotions.

“We are delighted to honour the legacy of Prof Azumah Nelson through this boxing tournament named after him and we are glad he will be with us at ringside to celebrate the occasion,” Ngowi said.

He added: “It is rare for living boxers to have tournaments or landmarks named in their honour. However, WABA and Aborigines Boxing Promotions have established a standard for others to emulate.”

Beyond the headline clash, two additional WABA world-rated title fights will feature.

Ghanaian Saviour Gad faces Eliasu Sulley for the vacant Supreme Global Super Middleweight Championship, while Abubakar Mubarak takes on Justin Hounkpevi of Benin for the vacant Supreme World Super Middleweight crown.

At least eight more undercard bouts are expected, ensuring Keta cements its reputation as a rising hub for boxing and sports tourism.
