The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has reiterated his commitment to guiding the Black Stars to an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.

Speaking to Asaase Radio, Okraku acknowledged the national team’s struggles in recent editions of the tournament.

Ghana failed to progress beyond the group stage in the 2021 and 2023 AFCON tournaments and also missed qualification for the 2025 edition in Morocco following a disappointing qualifying campaign.

“I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and that is the fact. Only God knows the number of times we have tried, and we have not been able to win the AFCON title,” Okraku said, noting that success has been achieved at other levels, including the U-20 team’s AFCON victory and the Black Queens securing bronze at the WAFCON.

He highlighted other recent achievements under his leadership, including the Black Starlets’ return to the AFCON and the Black Princesses qualifying for the final round of U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, where they have previously reached the World Cup twice.

“Basically, I want to win every tournament for Ghana, and I want to place Ghana on the medal podium on any given occasion,” he added.

Okraku reflected on past AFCON performances, saying he was not surprised by the Black Stars’ results in recent competitions.

“We qualified for the AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire, and it was a disaster; it didn't go well, and I was very livid about the turnout of the events because I saw everything unfold right [before] my eyes,” he said.

He revealed that, prior to the tournament, he had anticipated the outcome based on his understanding of the team’s situation. “Going into that competition, I was not expecting anything different… for those of my guys who were close to me, I was very clear to them in private that it won't work. We exited the competition, and once we came home, there was a need to re-examine what we did.”

Ghana’s last AFCON title came in 1982, with three final appearances in 1992, 2010, and 2015 ending in defeat. Okraku remains determined to end the national team’s long title drought.
