Ghana confirmed as host of 24th African Senior Athletics Championships
Ghana has officially secured the hosting rights for the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and Ghana Athletics.
The agreement, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adam, confirms the country’s readiness to host the continental event from May 12–17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Conference Room, was attended by a high-powered CAA delegation led by its President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and CEO, Lamine Fati.
The CAA Region Two team, headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa, was also present.
Ghana Athletics President, Bawah Fuseini, represented the national federation, alongside officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee, led by Lawyer Richard Akakpovie, and the National Sports Authority, represented by Deputy Director General (Technical), Madam Victoria Commey.
Stakeholders at the event expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s capacity to host the championship successfully.
The MoU outlines the responsibilities and cooperation framework among the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in preparation for the 2026 competition.
Earlier engagements included courtesy visits by CAA and Ghana Athletics officials to the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate as part of preparatory activities.
The championships are expected to bring together top athletes from across the continent, further enhancing Ghana’s reputation as a reliable destination for major international sporting events.
