Sports Minister explains how Ghana's World Cup tickets were allocated

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has explained how tickets secured by Ghana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were distributed following concerns from some Ghanaians about difficulties in obtaining tickets for Black Stars matches.

Responding to allegations that tickets allocated by the ministry had been diverted or sold for personal benefit in the United States, Mr Adams said the limited allocation was shared among corporate sponsors, recognised supporters' groups, winners of a public raffle and Ghanaians living abroad through Ghana's diplomatic missions.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based 3FM on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, the minister said corporate sponsors received tickets based on the level of financial support they provided towards Ghana's World Cup campaign.

According to him, Engineers and Planners, which he described as the country's biggest sponsor, contributed US$2 million and received between 40 and 70 tickets for each Black Stars match.

He said companies that contributed between GH¢1 million and several million cedis received smaller allocations.

Mr Adams added that tickets were also distributed to recognised supporters' unions, winners of a public raffle, and Ghanaians resident in the United States and Canada through Ghana's diplomatic missions.

"Those tickets are issued through an email. So the records are there," he said, adding that the ministry could verify whether any individual had received or paid for a ticket.

He dismissed claims that government-issued tickets had been resold, explaining that reports of ticket resale in the United States involved individuals who had legitimately acquired tickets before resale prices increased.

Mr Adams noted that ticket resale was permitted under FIFA regulations and the laws of the United States during the tournament.

Providing a breakdown of the allocation for the Black Stars' group-stage matches, the Minister said the Ministry procured a total of 2,922 tickets.

Of the total, 948 tickets were allocated for Ghana's match against Panama, 1,000 for the England game and 974 for the fixture against Croatia.
