Bawumia launches GoRide: Ghana’s first local ride-hailing app to boost taxi drivers’ earnings
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched GoRide, Ghana’s first locally developed ride-hailing mobile application.
Created through a partnership with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), GoRide is designed to empower Ghanaian taxi drivers who have faced increasing competition from foreign-owned digital transportation platforms.
The launch event, held in Accra on Wednesday, October 30, highlighted the app’s mission to support local drivers by offering fairer conditions and a sustainable alternative to international ride-hailing services.
“With a competitive commission of just 10%, our drivers are being empowered to retain their hard-earned money, allowing them to improve their financial stability and support their families.
Dr. Bawumia emphasised that GoRide is part of a larger governmental strategy to empower local businesses. “This is about restoring dignity to our divers and ensuring that they thrive. This initiative reflects our government’s unwavering dedication to supporting local businesses and driving growth by keeping the profit generated by GoRide.
Additionally, the Vice President underscored the economic benefits of a locally driven platform.
“Within our borders, we are conserving foreign exchange, fostering local wealth, and creating and enhancing our national economy. Every ride taken on GoRide contributes directly to Ghana’s economy, helping to build a sustainable forth for all of us,” he stated.
The GoRide app, now available on both Android and iOS, promises not only to redefine convenience and accessibility in Ghana’s transportation sector but also to foster greater economic self-reliance and wealth retention within the country.
