The Cocoa, Coffee, and Sheanut Farmers Association, representing some of Ghana’s most outstanding cocoa farmers, has lauded the government for what it describes as an “unprecedented” increase in cocoa producer prices.

On October 2, 2025, the government announced a new producer price of GHS 3,625 per bag of cocoa, equivalent to GHS 58,000 per tonne.

This marks a 12.27% increase from the GHS 3,228 per bag announced in August, allowing farmers to earn roughly GHS 400 more per bag.

Speaking at a meeting in Kumasi, the Association’s spokesperson, Imoro Issifu Alhassan, commended the Mahama-led administration for responding to the long-standing appeals of cocoa farmers.

“We are happy and indeed very pleased that COCOBOD, and by extension the government, has been able to provide us with an increment that we have been yearning for over the years,” Alhassan said.

He described the move as “unprecedented”, explaining that it was rare for cocoa prices to be reviewed twice within a single season.

“I consider it unprecedented because the cocoa price was increased in August, and then by the end of September, another increment was made. That’s why it is unprecedented, ”he added.

Supporting the Association’s position, Nana Charles Owusu, Chief Farmer for the Western North Region and a COCOBOD board member, also praised the government for the price hike but cautioned against the growing threat of illegal mining (galamsey) to cocoa farms.

In response, Jerome K. Sam, Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, assured farmers that the government is taking active measures to curb galamsey activities and safeguard cocoa production.

He reaffirmed COCOBOD’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring that the gains from the price increase translate into improved livelihoods for farmers across the country.
