Electric buses to pilot on Adenta-Accra, Ashaiman-Accra routes – Bawumia
The flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that Ghana's first fleet of electric buses will begin operations on a pilot basis.
The announcement was made during the launch of the buses on Wednesday, 27 November 2024, in Accra.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significance of the pilot project, which marks the beginning of Ghana’s transition to a modern and sustainable public transport system.
“Starting this year with a pilot on two major routes in the national capital, Adenta to Accra and Ashaiman to Accra,” he stated.
“After the pilot, we’ll expand to the rest of the regions and the country,” the Vice President revealed.
The fleet, introduced under the National Electric Vehicle Policy of 2023, is designed to reduce carbon emissions, cut operational costs, and provide an efficient public transport experience.
The pilot will feature 10 electric buses, with plans to expand the fleet to 100 nationwide as part of a long-term strategy to modernize Ghana’s public transport system.
