GTA clarifies service charges and taxes for restaurants
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has held a meeting with restaurant and catering operators to explain customer service charges and their alignment with Ghana's laws.
Deputy CEO Ekow Sampson emphasised that the GTA's mandate is to promote sustainable tourism and ensure compliance with statutory levies, including VAT, NHI, GETFund, and Tourism Levy.
Mr Sampson clarified that service charges are not legally mandated and should not be confused with taxes.
"Service charges are commercial and discretionary practices of the business itself, not legal levies collected on behalf of the government," he said.
Businesses are required by law to be transparent about taxes and charges, informing customers at the point of purchase.
Non-compliant practices could damage Ghana's tourism image and undermine consumer trust.
The meeting aimed to foster dialogue and encourage compliance with tax laws and transparent communication.
The GTA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a fair and reputable tourism environment that benefits businesses and Ghana's tourism brand.
