Ghana leads West Africa with cleanest fuel and sustainable energy initiatives: NPA
Ghana has emerged as a pioneer in the West African sub-region, proudly touting the cleanest fuel with a sulphur content of 50 parts per million (ppm), according to Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
This achievement, he noted, was a result of a policy shift driven by the demands of civil society and the public, aligning with decarbonisation goals and environmental preservation.
Speaking at the Egypt Energy Show in Cairo, Dr Abdul-Hamid, also the President of the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA), emphasised Ghana's commitment to advancing clean cooking practices through the innovative Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM).
The CRM seeks to address safety concerns at LPG refilling stations, protect the environment, curb deforestation, and enhance the lives of rural women.
Highlighting the positive impact of the CRM, Dr Abdul-Hamid mentioned the establishment of exchange points nationwide, contributing to improved accessibility to LPG.
In a further push for sustainability, Ghana has placed an order for 100 electric-powered buses for the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT), aligning with the nation's commitment to an energy transition agenda.
Dr Abdul-Hamid underscored the government's dedication to solar energy, with policies encouraging both state institutions and private individuals to adopt solar power.
Praising Ghana's vibrant freedom of speech, he acknowledged the vital role played by civil society organisations and the public in propelling the nation towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
