Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana seeks review of police operations
The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressing their concerns regarding the ongoing police operation targeting motorcyclists, particularly couriers in various parts of the country.
In a letter signed by Abugri Timothy Agengri, the union admits that there is a need for strict maintenance of law and order. However, they believe that the current approach being used by the police is overtly restrictive and is negatively impacting their operations.
‘We understand the need for maintaining law and order, but we believe that the current approach seems overly restrictive and negatively impacts our operations’
Again, the union highlighted how massively they are contributing significantly to the local economy and how essential they are in delivering goods and services across the city.
However, these strict measures used by the police, including roadblocks and frequent stops, are causing undue delays and severely affecting their ability to serve clients efficiently.
The Union has also expressed its worry as many motorists have complained of many accounts of harassment and extortion by the police, which they find totally unacceptable.
‘Many of our riders have reported instances of harassment and extortion, which we find unacceptable.
The union is requesting the police to review operational guidelines to ensure fairness and avoid undue targeting of motorcyclists
Establish clear communication channels for reporting police misconduct.
Educate officers on the role of motorcycle couriers in the economy and the need for balanced enforcement.
The Union has called for a roundtable meeting with the police to further discuss and make a collaborative solution that balances law enforcement with the needs of the courier industry.
