NLA, Fidelity Bank to launch modernised POS terminals, raises instant win cap
The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has officially launched a modernised Point-of-Sale (POS) channel for its Lotto Marketing Companies (LMCs) in partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana and technology partners.
The initiative seeks to address a nearly decade-long decline in the Authority's POS channel by replacing obsolete 2G connectivity and manual keypad terminals with modern POS equipment and network infrastructure.
Key Features of the Partnership
According to remarks delivered by the Director-General of the NLA at the official launch, the modernisation agreement follows around a year of technical assessments, commercial negotiations and risk reviews.
Key operational changes introduced through the agreement include:
- Higher instant win ceiling: The instant win payout limit through the POS channel has been raised from GHS 1,200 to GHS 30,000.
- Payout discounting option: High-tier winners now have the option to receive immediate full payment at the point of sale directly through Fidelity Bank, rather than waiting for the NLA's standard settlement cycle. The NLA will subsequently reimburse Fidelity Bank over an agreed period.
- Infrastructure upgrades: Outdated 2G terminals will be phased out and replaced with current-generation equipment across the country over the coming months.
Response to Market Competition
During the launch, the Director-General said the upgrade is intended to help the NLA compete more effectively against accredited Private Lotto Operators.
He stated that regulatory measures alone are insufficient to address market pressure, stressing that the Authority must compete by offering better technology, faster networks and an improved customer value proposition.
The launch concluded with the formal signing of the agreement between the National Lottery Authority and Fidelity Bank Ghana. Rollout of the new terminals and payment options to LMCs nationwide will proceed over the coming months.
