Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience

Global Citizen is making a return to Ghana.

In its boomerang, the organisation, formerly called Global Poverty Project, which harnesses entertainment to draw attention to pressing causes like its commitment to the eradication of extreme poverty, will debut its latest initiative called Move Afrika.

Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience Tour 2024, according to Global Citizen's X post from Wednesday, January 17, 2024, is in collaboration with Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free's 4-year-old PGLang: A Los Angeles-headquartered American independent multidisciplinary creative communications company specialising in music and visual media production.

Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Paul Kagame, of Ghana, West Africa, and Rwanda, East Africa, respectively, are in on Move Afrika also. The programme will simultaneously debut in their respective countries.

Move Afrika, according to Global Citizens Founder and CEO Hugh Evans, is a half-decade commitment pioneering an unprecedented international music tour across African nations, aimed at catalysing economic investment, job creation, and inspiring and supporting entrepreneurship in host countries.

Evans, in a 2023 interview with Bloomberg, revealed the mind behind Move Afrika.

“Global Citizen – for those of you who aren’t familiar – is the world’s largest movement of citizens taking action for the eradication of extreme poverty within our lifetime.

“For the last several years, we’ve taken a step back regarding our work on the continent of Africa, and we’ve asked ourselves: ‘How do we not just do big one-off events?’ For example, a few years ago, we took Beyonce and Jay Z to South Africa, and obviously it became a worldwide event when it was the first time they’d performed on the continent together.

“But this year, we took a step back and said: ‘We don’t want to do one-offs like that. We want to build something sustained’.

“And so this year, we announced the launch of Move Afrika, a five-year commitment to go North, South, East and West Africa – across the continent.

“And a few moments ago, with President Paul Kagami of Rwanda, and President Akufo-Addo of Ghana, we announced that we’re taking Global Citizen to both Kigali, Rwanda, as well as [Accra], Ghana, West Africa, this coming year.

“And our ask is really for people to invest in the continent,” he said.

Saturday, September 24, 2022, the Global Citizen Festival took place at the Black Star Square in Ghana's capital, Accra. At the same time, folks at Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, USA, had their fair share.

In Ghana, music stars like Usher, SZA, Stormzy, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Kwesi Arthur and Yaw Tog performed to a rapturous audience.

The event left a lasting impression on the Ghana music and event industry, as its organisation, security and audio/visual quality was noted with much laudation. Some entertainment figures have observed since the Global Citizen Festival 2022, music events in Ghana have seen significant improvement.
