Bawumia launches GMX App to aid music makers, executives duly monetise their works

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has led the launch of the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) App.
On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the event brought industry executives and musicians, policy makers, and the media - traditional and new - together at De Icon, East Legon, Accra.
Dr Bawumia noted the GMX App was going to check piracy, and promote Ghanaian music locally and internationally. He added the heart-shaped GMX App will ensure all players in the music value chain were duly compensated.
Frank Kwabena Owusu, alias Frank 5, an executive at the Creative Arts Agency (CAA), pointed out a subscription on GMX App asked only GHS9.99. There is the option to use the App for free but with ad pop-ups, he noted.
He added, no bank card or international payment platform was necessary to use the GMX App, whether one was a creative or consumer. The App, he explained, was mobile money-compliant.
The GMX App, a private initiative by GMX Multimedia, with support from the government via the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MoTAC), and the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bawumia campaign, will be fully operational come January 25. It will cover, not only the use of digital copies of music, but also live performances at religious and recreational events, among others.
"The work has been completed and we have joint work between MUSIGA, GHAMRO, music producers and the private sector. We are going to support this and make sure that we take care of the development expenses related to this platform," Dr Bawumia assured.
The GMX App launch was attended by MoTAC boss Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) boss Akwasi Agyeman, CAA boss Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, and Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) boss Bessa Simons, and GMX CEO Ato Tandoh, among others.
Music stars like producers Zapp Mallet, Fred Kyei Mensah, Appietus, Da Hammer, Kaywa, Altra Nova; singers Samini, EL, Praye Tietia, Broda Sammy, and Nicolas Omane Acheampong, Dada KD, King Ayisoba, among others.
Manning music for the night was Andy Dosty, who at a point dropped King Paluta's megahit Aseda which moved Dr Bawumia to dancing.
The GMX App, designed by Omni Strategies, is available on both iOS and Android.
