Kwabena Asante opens up about early career struggles on Ayekoo Ayekoo
During an interview on Ayekoo Ayekoo hosted by Docta Kay Nie, musician Kwabena Asante shared candid reflections on his music career and the challenges he faced while working independently in his early years.
Asante explained that in his early days, he didn’t face many problems. “I produced myself at that time. I wanted to release an album, but a little problem happened,” he said. He also spoke about the importance of being cautious about the people around you . “In Ghana, one problem is that when God gifts you with something, look at the people you walk with—look at them well—because you might have a vision and someone will break you down,” he explained.
He recalled a specific incident in 2008 when he was supposed to collaborate with Nacee. “I called someone to go with me. When we went, the person told me to say things this way and that way, and that affected me,” he said. After the music was released, conversations and debates about the project became intense, and he decided to withdraw all the tracks.
“I dropped all the songs,” he added. “I am the only child, and everything I do becomes successful. I think about people, so God doesn’t want to put me to shame. But anytime I think about somebody, I become unlucky.”
Asante also revealed that despite warnings, he often feels compelled to help others. “Sometimes I hear, ‘don’t walk with the person,’ but because I am a human being, I think I have to help. If not because of the person, I have a lot of albums that even shut me down,” he said.
The interview offered insight into Kwabena Asante’s early music journey, highlighting the delicate balance between pursuing personal ambition and navigating challenges in the music industry.
