Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, says the final evacuation of about 900 Ghanaians will begin on July 25.

The group voluntarily opted to leave following recent xenophobic attacks.

According to Mr Quashie, the exercise marks the final phase of the government's evacuation programme for affected Ghanaian nationals, following earlier operations that have already returned hundreds of citizens safely to Ghana.

Addressing members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa on Tuesday, July 14, the high commissioner said the latest repatriation exercise was made possible through the support of the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to concerns over the safety and welfare of Ghanaians affected by the attacks.

“We are going to do the final repatriation of close to 900 Ghanaians who have voluntarily given their names here in South Africa that they want to go,” Mr Quashie said.

Quashie said about 926 Ghanaians have already been repatriated in earlier phases, with the rest set to return in the final operation on July 25.

He explained that the exercise will be conducted in phases, with flights departing daily until all registered beneficiaries have been transported back to Ghana.

The high commissioner expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for facilitating the evacuation, describing the intervention as a demonstration of the government's commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.
