ECOWAS launches 50th anniversary celebrations with call for unity and economic resilience

Dignitaries and leaders from across Africa gathered in a show of solidarity and pride to officially launch the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, warmly welcomed African leaders and delegates to the historic event.
He underscored the importance of the milestone, not only as a moment of celebration but as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to the ideals of regional integration.
“This golden jubilee is not just a celebration,” he said.
“It is a moment to consolidate the gains made over the past five decades and to reinforce our collective dedication to peace, economic growth, and unity within the West African sub-region.”
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Oumar Alieu Touray, also addressed the gathering, highlighting some of the bloc’s key achievements over the years.
He expressed optimism about the region’s future and lauded the progress made in fostering economic cooperation and integration.
“There is every reason to celebrate,” Dr. Touray said.
“Through the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, we have broken down trade barriers and enabled the free movement of people across member states. These strides have created opportunities and accelerated development across the region.”
The event marks the beginning of a series of activities scheduled to commemorate ECOWAS’s 50-year journey of promoting regional cooperation, economic development, and political stability in West Africa
