Health Minister defends handshake with Ralph St. William amid assault controversy

Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has defended his widely discussed handshake with political activist Ralph St. William, who has been accused of assaulting a health worker at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital.
The Minister explained that the gesture, captured in a viral video, was “a courtesy expected of a public officer” and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of St. William’s alleged actions.
Speaking at a press conference today, Mr. Akandoh stressed that the government’s commitment to accountability in the case remains firm, assuring the public that due process would not be compromised.
“The handshake was a matter of courtesy, nothing more.
It does not, in any way, change the government’s position on ensuring that justice is served,” he said.
The controversy erupted after footage surfaced showing the Minister warmly shaking hands with St. William following a meeting with hospital management.
The incident has fueled heated debate, with sections of the public questioning whether the government is taking the matter seriously.
Mr. Akandoh reiterated that the handshake would not influence investigations or the outcome of the case, urging Ghanaians to remain confident in the process.
The alleged assault has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift action to protect health workers and uphold accountability.
