The former Chairman of the People’s National Convention, Mr Bernard Mornah, has said there was a point in his lifetime that he hunted lizards to survive.

This was in the early 80s during the hunger period in Ghana.

He told Ohenewaa Kesse Boahen on Obra Mu Nsem on CTV on Wednesday, 15 November 2023, that neither of his parents was with him at Wa, where he grew up, and so had to fend for himself, since his non-biological mother, with whom he stayed, always fed her biological children with the little food that was available before he was given any, if any were left at all.

"I had to go round with a cane loooking for lizards, hunt lizards and go and roast or cook it and use that as my meal to survive", he recalled, narrating: "I ate lizards to survive".

"When you get the lizard, you look for millet and go to the grinding stone to mill the millet and mix the stock of the cooked lizard with the millet. We call it 'kankale'; then you eat it", he explained.

"It was an experience but that shaped my growing up", he said, adding: "You can understand the humanity in me that when it comes to suffering, I went through it, I lived it and, so, when I see people, I can feel what they are going through and that is how come I'm so passionate when I'm making my national conversations because I lived these circumstances".

Also, he revealed, "I had to walk to Sankana to Kaleo, 8 kilometres in and another 8 kilometres back home".
