The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has clarified circumstances surrounding a viral social media video showing a police officer brandishing a firearm during a confrontation with personnel of a towing company contracted by the assembly.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, the assembly said preliminary investigations showed the incident occurred at about 2 PM on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Roman Hill in Kumasi's Central Business District.

According to the KMA, personnel of Day and Night Towing Service found a saloon car parked at an unauthorised location, clamped the vehicle and began the process of towing it away. 

The assembly said a uniformed police officer, identified as Y.E. Aboagye, subsequently arrived at the scene and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

It said the officer questioned the towing company's authority to remove the vehicle, leading to a heated verbal exchange.

The KMA further alleged that the officer threatened to shoot personnel of the towing service in the foot if they attempted to tow the vehicle.

The assembly described the incident as unfortunate and highly avoidable. 

It also stressed that the incident did not involve the KMA Security Taskforce, urging the public to disregard false information linking the viral video to the taskforce.

According to the assembly, the matter has been reported to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
