Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Acting Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for appointment as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The President has formally forwarded Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s name to the Council of State for consideration.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has had a distinguished career spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, has been widely commended for his diligence, integrity, and contribution to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence.

He has earned the respect of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal community for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Since April 22, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice, bringing to the role decades of judicial experience and leadership.

Government spokesperson and Minister for Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the nomination in a statement on Tuesday, noting that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice.”

 

If approved, he will succeed to the position on a substantive basis, becoming the head of Ghana’s judiciary.
