President Mahama commissions Akweteyman Central Mosque, calls for deepened peaceful coexistence among all faiths
President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the Central Mosque at Akweteyman, urging continued unity, safety, and cooperation among Ghanaians of all faiths.
Speaking at the ceremony, the president explained that construction of the mosque had earlier been paused due to serious structural concerns involving the foundation and pillars. He said expert advice was sought to ensure the safety of worshippers, stressing that no place of worship should pose a risk to human life.
“Once the foundation and pillars were properly strengthened and the structure was certified safe, work resumed and the mosque was completed,” he noted.
President Mahama said the commissioning ceremony was a simple but significant occasion, dedicating the mosque to the memory of Malam Adi Akweteyman. He prayed that Allah would answer the prayers of all who worship at the mosque and that it would be a source of blessing to the people of Akweteyman and all who visit from near and far.
He expressed appreciation to all who contributed to the completion of the mosque, particularly the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Theresa Lardi Awuni, affectionately called Obaanaa, who regularly monitored the progress of the project, as well as other individuals and groups whose support made the project possible.
The president described the mosque as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s unique tradition of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. He highlighted the presence of a Christian cleric at the ceremony as evidence of the harmony that exists among Muslims, Christians, and practitioners of African traditional religions in the country.
“You will hardly find this elsewhere, but Ghana is unique. We worship differently, yet we live together in peace,” he said, praying for God’s continued blessings on the nation’s unity.
