President Mahama declares July 1 as National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

President John Dramani Mahama has officially designated July 1, traditionally celebrated as Republic Day, as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Presidency on April 25, 2025, where a 34-member planning committee was inaugurated to oversee preparations for the inaugural observance.
In his address, President Mahama emphasised the importance of unity and spiritual reflection in national development.
He highlighted Ghana's religious diversity as a strength, stating, "One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faiths.
Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists—we worship differently but work together as one people.
This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted."
The President underscored that the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving fulfils a promise made during his 2024 campaign to institute a day dedicated to collective spiritual reflection.
He called on all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, to participate in the observance, encouraging citizens to seek divine guidance for the nation's progress.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, appointed as the chairman of the planning committee, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the team.
He assured the nation of their commitment to organising an inclusive and meaningful event, stating, "We will consult broadly, engage inclusively, and bring everybody on board from every region, every faith, every background because the national day of thanksgiving belongs to all of us."
