The United States Embassy in Accra has welcomed 29 new Peace Corps trainees to Ghana as part of the agency’s ongoing partnership with the country.

The trainees, who arrived in January, will serve in the areas of Agriculture, Education, and Health across various communities nationwide.

As part of their 10-week pre-service training, the trainees will undergo cultural immersion, learn local Ghanaian languages for daily communication, and acquire practical, hands-on skills needed to effectively support community development initiatives. The training is designed to prepare them for meaningful engagement with host communities and sustainable service delivery.

The arrival of the new cohort coincides with the Peace Corps’ 65th anniversary of its partnership with Ghana, a milestone that highlights the country’s historic role in the organisation’s global mission.

Ghana was the first country in the world to receive Peace Corps Volunteers, marking the beginning of a long-standing collaboration in development and people-to-people exchange.

Speaking at the welcome event, Franchesca M. Minikon-Reece, a Foreign Service Officer at the Embassy in Accra and a former Peace Corps Volunteer and staff member, underscored the significance of Ghana in the Peace Corps’ history.

Drawing from her own experience as a volunteer in Burkina Faso and later as a staff member in Rwanda, she encouraged the trainees to appreciate the depth of the partnership and the impact of their service.

The Peace Corps’ continued presence in Ghana reflects enduring cooperation between the two countries and a shared commitment to community development, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.
