The President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ms María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés has lauded Ghana’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially on quality education and reduction in the inequality gap.

Ms Garcés made this known in an interaction with the media after she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey upon her arrival in Ghana on Wednesday, 8 May 2019.

Ms Garcés said: “It is commendable how much this country is committed to quality education, to reducing the inequality gap, to diversify the economy and to establish affirmative policies to protect the most vulnerable and the poorest of the poor. This is truly a good example that should be looked at by the entire African continent and by the entire world and I hope my visit will help bring this to the fore”.

For her part, Ms Botchwey said the visit of the UN chief is in the right direction, as her vision resonates with the priorities of the Akufo-Addo-led government.

Ms Botchwey further pledged Ghana’s commitment to the United Nations.

Ms Garcés is in Ghana on a four-day state visit to, among others, strengthen the ties between Ghana and the United Nations and also raise awareness on the importance of strengthening multilateralism as the best option for responding to global crises and challenges.

While in Ghana, she will also hold bilateral meetings with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye and the leadership of Parliament, as well as meet a High-Level Ministerial Committee on the SDGs and later pay a courtesy call on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia palace in Kumasi.

Ms Garcés was accompanied by her Chef de Cabinet, Ambassador Kwabena Osei-Danquah and welcomed at the VVIP section of the Kotoka International Airport by the Minister of Planning, Professor George Gyan Baffour; Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ms Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee; Special Advisor to the President on the SDGs, Dr Eugene Owusu; and Acting UN Resident Coordinator Ms Sylvia Lope Ekra.
