Police foil highway robbery, gun down 3 suspects, retrieve 7 weapons

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has announced that the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has gunned down three suspected armed robbers to prevent a planned highway robbery along the Anwiankwanta–Obuasi Highway in the Ashanti Region.

A police statement identified the suspects as Seidu Issah, Musah Yakubu, and Yahaya 'Tijani' Munkaila, who were gunned down on December 24, 2025, "when they converged in a bush between Anwiankwanta and the Jacobu junction to carry out a planned operation.

"The officers encountered the gang, came under gunfire, and returned fire, gunning down the three suspects."

Police explained that two other suspects escaped.

Two pump action guns loaded with ammunition, one unbranded pistol, 25 live cartridges, and six spent cartridges, were retrieved by police from the scene.

Police said the suspects were shot were rushed to Bekwai Municipal Hospital, "where they were pronounced dead on arrival, and their bodies were deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy".

The Christian Yohuno-led service explained that the suspects are believed to be behind several robberies including the Jacobu airport robbery on November 3, 2025, which led to the death of a security man; multiple highway robberies along the Manso stretch; the Antoakrom robbery; the Abofour forest robbery near Offinso; and the attack on a gold buyer at Anwiankwanta on December 8, 2025.

Police further indicated that a follow-up operation on December 26, 2025, at a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta, where the suspects usually hide rifles, they recovered one AK47 assault rifle, one MG3 rifle, one pump action gun, and one single barrel gun, together with ammunition and personal items. 

"Strenuous efforts are underway to trace the sources of the weapons and arrest accomplices currently at large," the police statement concluded.
