Two Togolese nationals arrested in voter registration fraud in Buem Constituency

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, around 4 PM, two Togolese nationals were apprehended by police in the Buem Constituency of the Jasikan District of the Oti Region, for allegedly attempting to partake in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Reports indicate that the suspects were allegedly brought into the country by executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fraudulently register as voters.
These individuals were part of a larger group orchestrated by NDC Constituency executives.
While the duo was detained, the remainder of the group fled upon the arrival of the security personnel.
The two suspects are now in police custody at the Jasikan Divisional Police Command, assisting with investigations.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, which has cast a shadow over the integrity of the voter registration process.
This incident has intensified scrutiny of the current guarantor system, which has faced criticism for being vulnerable to exploitation.
Allegations suggest that NDC executives are using this system to unlawfully register foreign nationals.
In the wake of these arrests, the NDC Constituency Chairman and Organizer are working to secure bail for the detained individuals.
This episode has sparked debate over the efficacy of the guarantor system and the motives behind the NDC's staunch advocacy for its continued use.
The NDC leadership has consistently opposed the Electoral Commission's efforts to replace the guarantor system with the Ghanacard as the sole identification for voter registration in Ghana.
This arrest has further fueled discussions on the necessity of reforms to safeguard the electoral process.
