The Vice-Chancellor of the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Nana Ing. Prof. Osei-Owusu Achaw, has appealed to the government of Ghana to address matters relating to the strike of the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) to avoid derailment of their academic calendar.

TUTAG declared a strike on Monday, 7 October 2019, over unpaid allowances and demands for improved conditions of service. 

The Vice-Chancellor said such a situation often attracts a bad image for Ghanaian academic institutions.

"All of you are aware of the ongoing strike of the Technical University Teachers Association Ghana (TUTAG). I want to appeal to the government, through the Minister of Education, to deal with the matter as soon as practicable to avoid derailment of the academic calendar," he said.

The V-C was speaking at the 27th matriculation of the university to admit fresh students.

In all, a total of 6,277 students gained admission this academic year out of 7,094 applicants. Out of the 6,277 admitted students, a total of 4,561, comprising 1,839 females and 2,722 males accepted the offer of admission.

"It is gratifying to note that 25 postgraduate students pursuing various Master of Technology programmes in Water and Environmental Engineering, Health Statistics, Financial Statistics as well as Chemical Engineering are all being matriculated today," he said.

Prof. Osei-Owusu Achaw advised the matriculants to pay attention to lectures and cultivate the habit of reading. 

He urged them to utilise the opportunities offered by the era of technology and use their phones to access useful pieces of information that will add to the quality of their academic life.
