The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has urged a review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy to allow financially capable parents to contribute to their children's education expenses.

This suggestion comes in response to a report by Africa Education Watch, revealing challenges faced by the government in financing the policy.

According to the report, government spending per student under the Free SHS policy was GH¢1,241, while parents spent GH¢4,185 annually between the academic years 2017/18 and 2021/22. 

The study highlighted a decline in the government's budget credibility rate during this period.

NAGRAT believes that allowing parents who can afford it to contribute to their children's fees and expenses will alleviate some of the financial burden on the government. 

The association's proposal for a policy review aims to address the challenges associated with sustaining the Free SHS programme.
