The Omanhene Kyeame of the Asante Juaben Traditional Area, Dr Appiagyei Dankawoso I, has condemned the abduction of the chief of Akyem Abodom, Nana Korang III, by some youth describing it as a curse.

According to the traditional leader, who is also the president of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, people in leadership and positions of authority, including chiefs, should be given the due respect since they were installed by the almighty God.

Nana Dankawoso I’s comments follow the arrest of eight people by the Akyem Oda divisional police command for their alleged involvement in the abduction, torture and illegal destoolment of the chief of Akyem Abodom.

Nana Korang III was picked up by six masked men on January 27 around 5.30 a.m. while he was in the palace at Abodom with his elders preparing to observe the first Akwasidae of the year, according to the Oda divisional police commander, ACP F.S. Adikah.

The machete- and club-wielding assailants beat up the elders before abducting the chief.

The suspects dragged the chief to a nearby bush where they forcibly removed his cloth and pair of sandals and inflicted machete wounds on him. They then slaughtered a ram and drained the blood on his feet to signify his destoolment, ACP Adikah said.

The police got hints of the incident and rushed to the scene only to find the chief in the bush with blood oozing from different parts of his body. He was rushed to the New Abirem Government Hospital where he was admitted and treated.

Investigations by the police led to the arrest of the suspects, including one Comfort Duah, who was once proposed as the queen mother of Abodom but later rejected by the chief. The police, however, managed to retrieve four out of the five stools stolen by the suspects from the Abodam palace on the day of the incident.

Speaking to the host of the Gospel Breakfast Show (GBS), Rev. Azigiza on No. 1 FM 105.3 on Monday, 11 February 2019, Nana Dr Appiagyei Dankawoso I, said: “No one can abduct or kidnap any other person in spite of the person’s social status. Such an act is wrong and should not be done. Abducting the chief was a wrong thing, and should be dealt with by the state.

“In the Bible, we’re told that we should respect authority and, so, whether the person is a chief or is occupying any position in authority, that person must be respected and not be harassed this way. The action of the youth is a curse and, so, we should be very careful”, the chief added.
