Residents of Asikam, a community in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region, are expressing deep frustration following the seizure of wood earmarked for repairing the roof of the Asikam D/A Basic School by the Mpraeso office of the Forestry Commission.

The school’s roof was badly damaged during a storm about two weeks ago, prompting the community to mobilise resources to undertake urgent repairs.

With support from residents, including the donation of an odum tree by a local benefactor, the community managed to raise both funds and materials to restore the facility before the new academic term.

However, efforts to fix the roof were abruptly halted when officials from the Forestry Commission seized the wood, citing regulatory concerns.

This development has left pupils unable to return to class as the school remains unfit for use.

Speaking to the media, Mr Omari Sampson Asiedu, a Unit Committee member, explained the community’s disappointment and described the seizure as a major setback to their efforts to ensure children’s education is not disrupted.

Nana Ntim Boateng I, Chief of Asikam, has called for immediate intervention by local authorities to resolve the matter.

He is appealing to the Member of Parliament for the area,  Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and the District Chief Executive, Samuel Asamoah, to step in and mediate the impasse.

The chief also urged the Forestry Commission to reconsider its stance and show understanding, given the pressing educational needs of the community.

Parents and residents echoed these sentiments, emphasising that their only goal is to ensure their children can resume learning in a safe environment.

They are appealing to the relevant authorities to allow the roofing work to continue without further delay.
