Former MP appeals for calm amid rising tensions in Kusaug

Former Member of Parliament for Binduri Constituency in the Upper East Region, Mr Abdulai Abanga, has issued a passionate appeal for calm and restraint in the wake of escalating violence in the Kusaug area, which has tragically claimed the lives of innocent women and children.
In a statement addressing the recent unrest in Binguri, within the Binduri District, Mr. Abanga condemned the attacks in the strongest terms, describing them as “senseless killings” and a stain on the conscience of all involved.
“I urge everyone to exercise calm and restraint,” he said.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the families affected by this horrific event.”
Mr. Abanga expressed deep concern over the increasingly reprisal nature of the violence, warning that if left unchecked, it could spiral into a broader regional conflict.
He called on all parties to reject inflammatory rhetoric, lay down their arms, and support peacebuilding efforts to restore calm.
He further urged government authorities to adopt a more balanced approach to security measures in the area.
While acknowledging the intent behind the current curfew and motorcycle ban, he stressed that the restrictions were inflicting serious economic and social hardships on already vulnerable communities.
“The restrictions, though necessary in part, have brought untold hardships and increased vulnerability among already struggling communities,” he noted.
Commending the efforts of security agencies to contain the situation, Mr. Abanga called for a more proactive, community-focused approach to restore trust and ensure long-term stability.
In a strong show of support for ongoing mediation efforts, the former MP also threw his weight behind the Otumfuo-led peace initiative, describing it as a vital step toward sustainable resolution.
“All stakeholders must commit to the Otumfuo-led efforts,” he said.
“It is only through genuine dialogue and unity that we can build sustainable peace.”
Mr. Abanga’s statement adds to growing calls for calm and concerted efforts toward peace in the conflict-hit Kusaug area, as tensions continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
