Joseph Yamin, others attempted to seize billion bars from our head office - PMMC
The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, and others of attempting to interfere with bullion bars belonging to the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
The PMMC disclosed this in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 18th December, following the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 17th December.
According to the statement, the bullion bars in question are part of the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The programme is a key initiative to strengthen Ghana’s gold reserves and bolster the country’s economy.
The PMMC revealed that the interference led to a standoff that required the intervention of the Police.
After several hours, it was agreed that the bullion bars be transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for safekeeping while efforts were made to resolve the issue.
The PMMC noted that a private exporter, who is duly licenced to carry out gold exports, was also affected by the disruption.
The gold in the exporter’s possession was being processed for export when the incident occurred.
The company described the event as “unfortunate,” adding that it disrupted lawful operations and created unnecessary tension.
In its release, the PMMC condemned the incident, calling it an “unlawful action” that could damage Ghana’s international reputation in the bullion market.
It warned that such disruptions undermine the confidence of international gold buyers and pose a risk to Ghana’s standing as a trusted player in the global gold trade.
The company urged all stakeholders to act responsibly to protect the country’s economic interests and international credibility.
“The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), which by law acts as The National Assayer, has noted with deep concern an incident that occurred at the National Assay Centre located at the Aviance Cargo Terminal, where a mob led by a gentleman who identified himself as Mr. Jospeh Yammin, the National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) forcibly attempted to seize bullion bars being processed by PMMC for the Central Bank of Ghana.”
“The incident occurred on Tuesday 17th December, 2024 between the hours of 16.00 GMT lasting till about 12 midnight.
