President Mahama unveils acting ministerial appointments following helicopter tragedy
President John Dramani Mahama has announced interim ministerial appointments in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of two Cabinet ministers—Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
In a statement released by the Presidency Communications Directorate on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the following acting appointments were confirmed:
Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, currently serving as Minister for Finance, will assume additional responsibilities as Acting Minister for Defence.
Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has been appointed Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. “These appointments take immediate effect until further notice,” the statement noted.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Presidential Spokesperson, the appointments aim to ensure continuity and operational stability in key ministries during this period of national mourning.
The fatal crash, which occurred while the officials were en route to a state engagement in Obuasi, has sent shockwaves throughout the country.
The interim appointments come as Ghana grapples with the loss of two high-ranking ministers and six other officials.
President Mahama is expected to convene further briefings with the Council of State and party leadership in the coming days to address both the administrative impact and national healing process.
