The Western North Regional Deputy Women's Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madam Monica Baah, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for the recent upward adjustment in the cocoa producer price, describing it as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to the welfare of cocoa farmers.

The new price, which takes effect from August 7, 2025, raises the cocoa producer price from GH¢3,100 to GH¢3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag.

According to Madam Monica, the increment, though modest, is a step in the right direction and reflects sensitivity to the needs of farmers.

Speaking in an interview on Fabea FM with host Apiah-Kubi, Madam Baah explained that several economic indicators — including the appreciation of the cedi, declining fuel prices, and a drop in inflation — were carefully considered in determining the new price.

“This adjustment aligns cocoa pricing with prevailing international market trends and ensures that farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work,” she noted.

Madam Monica used the opportunity to highlight other pro-poor interventions rolled out under President Mahama’s administration, including the introduction of free tertiary education fees for first-year students. She emphasised that the policy has eased financial burdens on parents, allowing them to reallocate funds toward other pressing family needs.

She also revealed that the president has assured farmers of the reintroduction of free fertiliser distribution — a measure she described as “good news” for the cocoa sector and a major boost for productivity and sustainability.

Addressing criticisms from political opponents and industry stakeholders who claim the price increase is inadequate, Madam Monica pushed back, stating that such criticisms often come from individuals who are buyers in the cocoa trade and are driven by profit motives rather than the interests of farmers.

“Unlike others who only think of buying cocoa at cheaper prices, President Mahama is focused on improving the living conditions of our farmers,” she said.

She reiterated that the NDC remains committed to building a robust and equitable cocoa industry that benefits all stakeholders, especially the farmers who form the backbone of the economy.

“The government understands the needs of our cocoa farmers and is taking deliberate steps to secure their future,” Madam Monica concluded.
