Health Ministry refers Winneba Trauma hospital misconduct case to CID, AG
The Ministry of Health has referred a case of alleged medical misconduct at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, Central Region, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney- General’s Department for further investigation.
This decision follows a Ghana Health Service (GHS) probe that uncovered severe negligence by hospital staff, which contributed to the death of a patient.
The GHS investigation, led by a committee, found that key hospital officials failed to provide the necessary care for a patient who had been transferred to Ojobi.
The patient was reportedly abandoned there until her untimely death.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, the Ministry confirmed the committee's findings, noting that the staff's actions were inappropriate and recommending internal disciplinary action.
However, due to the serious nature of the incident, the Ministry opted for further scrutiny. "Given the gravity of this situation and the resulting loss of life, we have escalated the matter to the CID and requested the Attorney General’s assistance in assessing the culpability of the staff and pursuing any necessary legal action," the Ministry’s statement said.
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the highest standards of healthcare.
"We are committed to upholding the best practices in healthcare delivery and will take all necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur," the statement added.
The CID has now begun criminal investigations into the case, while the Attorney General’s Department is tasked with determining the appropriate legal measures to address the matter.
