#2024Polls: Mahama urges NDC members to channel frustration into nation-building
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from acts of vandalism and instead focus on contributing to nation-building following his victory in the 2024 general elections.
The appeal comes amidst reports of NDC supporters damaging property at Electoral Commission (EC) offices and other state facilities after provisional results declared him the winner of the polls.
During his victory speech at his campaign office, Mr Mahama addressed these reports, urging restraint and responsible behaviour.
“There have been reports of acts of vandalism at some government facilities and installations. I urge you not to vent your frustration in a criminal enterprise,” he cautioned.
Mr Mahama encouraged party members to channel their energy into productive endeavours, emphasising the need for unity and cooperation in rebuilding the nation.
“We must channel our anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our nation,” he said.
He also advised supporters to celebrate briefly, acknowledging the significant responsibilities ahead.
“Let us be brief in our celebration, for the weight of office will be an onerous one. Expectations of Ghanaians are very high, and we cannot afford to fail them,” he noted.
The president-elect credited his victory to the resilience and belief of NDC supporters, commending their collective commitment to change.
"Let us maintain and even magnify this joy and positivity that we feel. We have arrived at this moment because so many of you believed that change was possible. Now we know that not only is change possible, but it is also already in process,” added.
The Electoral Commission declared John Mahama the winner with 56.55 per cent of the vote, defeating Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, who secured 41.61 per cent.
