Disqualification of aspirants fair, no intent to block anyone's ambition – Jean Mensa
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has defended its decision to disqualify 11 presidential candidates from the upcoming December 7 elections, expressing confidence in its ability to handle legal challenges arising from the disqualification process.
Among those disqualified was Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), who, along with Kofi Siaw Asamoah of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has taken legal action against the EC to overturn the decision.
During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa emphasised that the disqualification process was carried out transparently and fairly.
“The nominations process was open and fair. Committees were set up, and their reports formed the basis for our decisions. The process is transparent,” Mrs. Mensa stated, addressing concerns about the EC's handling of the candidate vetting.
In response to the lawsuits filed by some of the disqualified candidates, she said: “A few have taken us to court, and we will prove to the citizenry and the people of Ghana that the process is transparent and fair. The EC has nothing to hide and no intention to block anyone’s presidential ambitions.”
The EC maintains that the disqualification decisions were based on thorough vetting procedures and remains steadfast in defending its position as the legal proceedings continue.
