Labour unionist warns NDC against premature campaigns

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has sharply criticised what he describes as early “campaign activities” by some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), warning that such actions risk dividing the party and distracting government from its core mandate.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Mr. Koomson questioned why individuals within the party appear to be pushing their presidential ambitions just eight months into the Mahama administration.

“That campaign some people have started is not sitting well with some of us.

Even though I don’t belong to any faction, what they are doing is creating problems for this country.

They should stop. Eight months in power and you start campaigning—what is that?” he asked.

His comments follow criticisms directed at NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who has come under scrutiny for embarking on a nationwide “Thank You Tour.”

While the chairman insists the tour is aimed at acknowledging grassroots contributions and calming frustrations over government appointments, critics view it as a subtle campaign effort ahead of 2028.

Traditionally, NDC national chairmen have supported flagbearer-led appreciation tours rather than leading independent initiatives.

Observers note that Asiedu Nketia’s decision to personally lead the exercise, especially in politically significant regions such as the Eastern Region, where he holds longstanding ties, could be interpreted as positioning for a future presidential bid.

Mr. Koomson cautioned that such moves could fuel unnecessary cracks within the governing party at a time when national focus is needed.

He urged all factions within the NDC to put aside personal ambitions and throw their weight behind President Mahama’s Reset Agenda.

“The President has a good plan for transforming Ghana, which requires unity and focus.

This is not the time for divisions. Let’s bury all the differences and work together to support President Mahama so he can deliver on his promises to the people,” he said.
