GFA hints at high-profile Black Stars friendly against EU side early 2026 before FIFA WC
Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has confirmed plans for the Black Stars to take part in a high-profile friendly against a European side in 2026 ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
The announcement comes after Ghana was drawn in Group L with Panama, England, and Croatia.
The USA, Canada, and Mexico are the co-hosts of the global showpiece.
According to Mr Asante Twum, requests had come from big European teams to play Ghana's Black Stars long before their recent games against Japan and South Korea, and the final draw on December 5, 2025.
"We are likely to have a highly European-friendly. Even before the draw, we had received some requests from some of the big houses. Even before we played against South Korea and Japan, we had some European teams writing to us to check if indeed we will be in a good place to play. So, what we have to do now is look at all the possibilities and which one would be benefitial to us and then we will go for it," he explained on TV3.
This is going to be Ghana's fifth appearance at the Mundial. For Qatar 2022, the team exited at the group stage. The best showing of the Black Stars remains 2010 in South Africa when they nearly made a historic entry into the semi-finals.
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, taken on England on June 23 in Boston, and lock horns with Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.
