Queens v Lionesses: We'll confidently defend Ghana's football legacy, Black Queens' Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah assures
Even though the Black Queens have a good measure of respect for the Lionesses of England, they will take them on fearlessly, Black Queens striker Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has said.
Ghana's Black Queens have an international friendly against England today, Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Chantelle spoke at a pre-match press conference, Monday, December 1, 2025, emphasising the team's calm confidence going into the high-profile game, inspired by Ghana's football legacy.
“We can respect the opponent, but at the same time we need to be ourselves. We are the Black Queens, and we need to do our things,” she said.
“If we do that, I think people will see our performance and our game in a positive way.”
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah is a former Everton and London City Lionesses forward. She acknowledged Ghana had not played against the Lionesses of England before, but stressed Ghana was unique compared to other countries that had recently folded under the pressure of the Lionesses. She indicated that the Black Queens were ready to defend their reputation and display its glory.
“We’re excited to play this game. We believe in our own qualities. You’ve mentioned a couple of countries there, but none of those countries are Ghana,” she said.
“We haven’t played England before, so it’s the first time the two nations are going to meet and we back ourselves.”
“We enjoy the football that we play. And we know that when we play our football, we can be a force against any team, any country we come up against.”
She also dismissed any suggestion of nervousness ahead of the contest, insisting the squad is mentally ready for the challenge.
“There’s no fear whatsoever within our camp. We believe in ourselves, and we’ll see the performance we put out tomorrow. We play our best football when we believe in ourselves, she added. “It’s an amazing occasion for us all.”
Tonight at 7 PM, the Black Queens face the Lionesses at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
On Sunday, November 30, 2025, the Black Queens were given a rousing welcome into Southampton by the Ghana Association of Southampton (GHASSO).
A great reception at the Royal Palace restaurant treated both technical and playing teams to local Ghanaian dishes, making the group feel very much at home. Apart from that, there was music, dance, and chatter to enliven the spirits as players and supporters mingled, amid photo opportunities.
The team's officials noted the time spent was “uplifting” and “timely”.
Monday evening, the team concluded its final training session at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton. Coach Kim Björkegren guided them through high-intensity drills, set-piece routines, and small-sided tactical work meant to ready the team for the speed and strength expected of their hosts.
"The atmosphere around the squad appeared calm but determined, with players showing strong energy and communication throughout the session," Ghana Football Association (GFA) reported.
