Force plastic companies to recycle – Sis Derby

Ghanaian Pop musician and TV personality, Sister Derby, has said companies that produce plastic products in Ghana should be obliged to recycle them or have recycling plants for doing so.
Speaking on Class91.3FM’s Class Drive (CD) on Tuesday, 7 January 2020, the “Uncle Obama” hitmaker, who is also in support of the total ban of plastics in the country, stressed the need to put alternatives in place before any such ban is enforced.
She also wants Ghana to study how Rwanda and Kenya were able to enforce the ban on plastics successfully.
“We need to create more awareness and we need to put alternatives in place because the masses don’t understand why you’re telling them rubber is not good or plastic is not good. They don’t understand, even if you say: ‘It chokes your gutters, now the water doesn’t flow in the gutters, it breeds mosquitoes, the choked gutters due to the plastics cause floods’.
“So, firstly, you have to create awareness, you have to educate and make people understand, so, it’s a whole process,” she stated.
Sis Derby also called for intensive education on plastic pollution and also for plastic producing companies to be compelled to go into recycling.
“You need to really educate people because people really don’t get what’s the big deal with it. People I’ve come across don’t really see, they’ve not even realised it. You walk by and you see gutters full of plastic bottles but it doesn’t occur to you if you haven’t heard someone talking about it; you need to be made to be aware, you need to be educated and then you need to make a conscious effort to develop that habit, which is quite difficult. But if people are made aware that: when you bring bottles to a certain place, you can get this amount of money, the more we do that we also encourage recycling. And I feel like more companies should be obliged, especially companies that produce plastic, to recycle or have a recycling plant.”
Sister Derby revealed that she currently finished recording a new song and urged her fans to watch out for it.
