'Susuka': Kinaata celebrates Otumfuo citing his lyrics at 2024 GBA conference

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has cited lyrics by Kinaata in a speech, much to the delight of the Highlife star.

The Warlord of Asante spoke during the 2024 Ghana Bar Association General Conference in Kumasi, Ashanti region.

Otumfuo asked his audience to recognise the uniqueness of Ghana among the nations of the world; a West African country admired greatly for its natural and human resources; its sense of democracy and social cohesion; its peace and heritage, etc. The Asante King acknowledged though Ghana had several things to improve on, it was still the envy of many.

To underline his point, Otumfuo brought up Martin Kofi King Arthur alias Kinaata's song Susuka, taking particular interest in the opening line: "Obi nya w'aye".

"I can think of many countries that look up to Ghana and wish they were just like us. Sometimes, listen to the wisdom of our musicians and reflect on a piece like Kofi Kinaata's 'Obi nya w'aye' which means 'Someone wishes they were like you," the Otumfuo said, drawing a round of applause from his audience.

Flattered by the Otumfuo's gesture, Kofi Kinaata took to social media to celebrate. Ever the humourous person, he frantically searched for a kente cloth to wear in his hotel room and finding none, he settled for the duvet. He wrapped it about him, according to tradition, did a proud gait and asked, Tuesday, September 10, "Has the Otumfuo mentioned your name before? Do you know the Otumfuo?"

In another video on Wednesday, he was seen on the balcony of his hotel room, listening to the part of Otumfuo's speech which broached his song. Again, he acted in an entertaining fashion, spreading his arms to exaggerate his size to a point he could not go through the door, to demonstrate his excitement.

"It is finished," he exclaimed several times.

Watch the video for Susuka, which entreats: "No matter how bad things may seem, mind your words. Someone is dying to be like you."
