The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has rolled out a specialised training programme for media professionals aimed at strengthening their understanding of weather forecasting and early warning systems.

Speaking at the training, Joe Tetteh Portuphy, Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Synoptic at GMet, said the initiative seeks to bridge the communication gap between forecasters and the public by equipping journalists with the skills to accurately interpret and relay weather information.

According to him, the agency wants media personnel to fully understand the colour codes, impact-based forecasts, and forecasting tools used in weather communication.

“Early warning systems only save lives and property if the public understands the forecast and acts on it.

The media plays a critical role in making that happen,” Mr. Portuphy stressed.

He highlighted the complexity of weather forecasting and emphasised that accurate forecasts must go hand-in-hand with effective communication.

“It is not enough for forecasters to generate precise predictions.

If they are not communicated clearly, the public cannot take the right precautions,” he added.

The training programme, he noted, is expected to enhance collaboration between GMet and the media, ensuring that weather updates are reported with accuracy, timeliness, and clarity.

This will ultimately improve public awareness and response to severe weather events, thereby reducing risks to life and property.

GMet described the training as a strategic investment in disaster preparedness, reinforcing the role of the media as a vital link between forecasters and the public.
