Michael Tetteh Kwetey has been elected President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) after a closely contested election held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Brofoyedru, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Kwetey secured 70 votes out of the 136 cast, narrowly defeating his opponent, Peter Kwesi Terkper, who polled 66 votes—a razor-thin margin of just four votes.

Delivering his victory speech, Mr. Kwetey thanked delegates for their confidence in him and pledged to lead with unity, vision, and purpose.

He described his election as a renewed beginning for GNAFF and emphasised the central role of farmers and fisherfolk in Ghana’s development.

“No society can ever imagine a future without farmers and fishermen and women,” he stated.

“This is a moment to put the election behind us and move forward together toward improved livelihoods and increased national productivity.”

Mr. Kwetey assured the government of GNAFF’s willingness to collaborate on initiatives aimed at boosting productivity and economic growth.

However, he made it clear that the Association would not hesitate to offer constructive criticism on policies that do not align with the interests of its members.

As part of his immediate plans, the newly elected president announced a nationwide tour to directly engage farmers and fisherfolk, understand their challenges, and explore solutions to improve their working conditions.

He also promised to engage policymakers and stakeholders actively, positioning GNAFF as a key player in shaping agricultural and fisheries policy in Ghana.

Calling on all members—including his former opponent—to come together in unity, Mr. Kwetey pledged to live up to the trust placed in him.

To underscore his preparedness for the role, he highlighted his strong academic and professional background. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Energy Law from the University of Ghana, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Central University College, and a Master of Administration in Oil and Gas Management from Coventry University.

He also holds a Master of Arts in Development Communication from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship from GIMPA.

According to him, this diverse academic foundation equips him with the legal, communication, and strategic management tools necessary to lead GNAFF effectively into a new era of advocacy, policy engagement, and transformation.
