‘Short but impactful reign’ — Bawumia on late Dagbon King's legacy
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has extended his condolences to the chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom following the passing of its overlord, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr Bawumia described the late monarch's death as a major loss for the Dagbon traditional area and the country as a whole.
He characterised the late King as a unifying leader whose leadership brought stability, peace, and growth to the kingdom.
“It is with grief that I send my sincere condolences to the Chiefs and people of the Dagbon Kingdom on the passing of Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The former vice president noted that Yaa-Naa Abukari II took the throne during a difficult phase in the kingdom's history, but managed to steer it toward unity and progress through patience and ancestral wisdom.
“His reign was short but greatly impactful," Bawumia remarked. "Through his wise leadership, he united families once broken and healed a society greatly fractured before him. He represented a blend of tradition and modernity perfectly in the way he led Dagbon. He constantly advocated for and lobbied for major developmental projects in Dagbon.”
Dr Bawumia also touched upon his personal relationship with the late monarch, noting that he frequently received guidance and counsel from him during his tenure as vice president and later as the NPP's presidential candidate. He called it an honour to have paid homage to the king at the ancient Gbewaa Palace.
Concluding his message, Dr Bawumia offered prayers for the king's family, the Dagbon traditional area, and the entire nation during this time.
