E/R: Two shot at Asamankese over chieftaincy dispute
Tensions flared in Asamankese, Eastern Region, over the weekend, resulting in a violent confrontation between residents and police.
The clash, which stemmed from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute involving self-proclaimed chief Ateabisa Kentinka Pobi Asomaning, left two people with gunshot wounds.
According to reports, the unrest began when the legitimate chief, Osabarima Adu Darko III, and his elders opposed Asomaning's attempt to bury his late mother and five relatives at the royal mausoleum. Asomaning had organised a grand funeral at his Beposo residence and later attempted to bury the deceased at the royal cemetery, sparking a heated argument between supporters of both factions.
The situation escalated when police intervened to arrest suspects allegedly armed within the palace, prompting violent resistance from residents. The police were forced to disperse the crowds, and additional reinforcements were deployed to restore calm.
The two individuals who sustained gunshot injuries have been receiving medical attention. Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have assured the public that those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice.
This incident highlights the ongoing chieftaincy disputes in the region, which have been a source of insecurity and concern for residents and investors alike.
The Royal Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Family of Asamankese had recently appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to intervene in the matter.
