Headmistress calls for inclusion of phonetics in national curriculum

The Headmistress of CP King of Glory International School, Mrs. Patience Thelma Akpeloo, has called on the government to integrate phonics learning into the national school curriculum, particularly at the primary level, to strengthen pupils’ reading and spelling skills.
Speaking at the school’s 9th graduation ceremony, Mrs. Akpeloo said phonics — a method that teaches reading by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters — has been highly effective in early childhood education worldwide.
She noted that its adoption at her school has enabled pupils to read and write with confidence, significantly boosting their literacy levels.
She further appealed to the government to provide financial support to private schools for feeding costs, stressing that such assistance would help reduce the burden on parents.
The ceremony marked the graduation of pupils from Kindergarten, Class Six, and JHS 3 to the next stage of their education. Mrs. Akpeloo urged parents to continue prioritising their children’s education as a long-term investment in their future
