C/R: Elmina residents demand destoolment of Omanhene Nana Kojo Kondua VI over lack of accountability

A concerned group of residents from Elmina, known as Sweet Elmina in the Central Region, has staged a protest demanding the destoolment of their Omanhene, Nana Kojo Kondua VI, citing over two decades of alleged neglect and lack of accountability.
The group, made up of both young and elderly men and women, says its mission is to advocate for the development and progress of Elmina.
This time, however, their focus is on what they describe as the poor leadership of their traditional ruler.
Speaking on behalf of the protestors, Mr. Phillip Kondua accused Nana Kojo Kondua VI of failing to account for community resources and assets since his enstoolment 27 years ago.
According to him, the Omanhene has never provided any form of transparency regarding the management of revenue from key local assets, including a community cold store, salt production, CJ Company Limited, and royalties from the Elmina Castle.
Residents are particularly angered by what they describe as the Omanhene’s silence and inaction after major cultural events such as the Edina Bakatue Festival, where they claim no financial or developmental reports are ever presented to the people.
Frustrated and disillusioned, the group has issued a stern warning to Nana Kojo Kondua VI, stating emphatically that they do not want to see him participate in the 2025 Edina Bakatue Festival.
The protest marks a growing wave of civic activism in the traditional community, with citizens demanding transparency, good governance.
